Caligula's conspiracy

ZONG Theater carries out a "conspiracy" against the authorities from the stage.

The one we know from "Othello - The Death of an Idealist", "Mission Philoctetes.

"The Last Survivor" and "Life is a Dream" (two IKAR awards and three

international awards) team, will present on December 14 (Sunday) at 5:00 PM

hours in the space of the metropolitan gallery "Hug me" (G. S. ul.

Rakovski" No. 63) its first premiere for the new theater season with

title "THE CONSPIRACY OF CALIGULA" by Stefan Tsanev.

The team describes their new project as a bloody comedy centered around

stands the figure of Gaius Caesar Germanicus, known as the Roman emperor

Caligula, who ruled from 37 to 41 AD, became famous as one of the most

the extravagant, despotic and cruel rulers of the Roman Empire.

The spectators are the audience of Caligula's performance, but also the people -

subject to manipulation by the emperor. The action takes place on the edge

between the created theatrical reality and the exposed direct communication with

the audience.

The performance does not seek to make a historical reconstruction of

the events of a bygone era, but to ask questions related not to this

why Caligula behaves like this and why he causes all these barbarities, and

why are the people silent and hiding, why are the people not rebelling in the name of their

freedom and democracy. It is precisely this opposite perspective to the one we know from

ancient Rome history articulates contemporary and current issues for

today's society, related to the political environment, the abuse of

power, autocracy and dictatorship, methods of government, the right to

voice, the right to freedom, the power of democracy.

"We hope the show will articulate a clear and emphatic message."

(in the direction of Brecht's theater), related to the initiative of the people in

a country, its power and ability to overturn paradigms,

dictating fear, silence and submission to a distorted political,

social and public system,” says director Boyan Arsov.

The performance seeks to give a new perspective on the big question in

Politics and art: which is stronger: the love of freedom or

fear? The time of the action in the premiere performance of the Theater

ZONG is indefinite – it is before, but also now, it is fragments of the past,

left as artifacts in the museum of the present, which come to life, speak and

testify as prerequisites for an ugly future that is becoming increasingly

more likely to repeat some of the darkest periods of human history

history and the hard lessons of the old centuries.

"Those who remembered the Roman Republic have long since died, those born after

they don't even know that there was a republic, they don't know what this thing is

democracy, because all stories are distorted, all books are

censored, the words republic and democracy are crossed out, erased,

slang, these two words no longer exist in our language, the people don't know

nothing but tyranny, he is fed with tyranny, he is accustomed to tyranny

like with a natural mother and that's why he tolerates, no - he doesn't tolerate, he lives normally,

he considers it normal, he even enjoys it, he feels good because he can't do anything else

knows if you suddenly declare a republic and democracy, if you shout to him: people,

you are free! – he won't know what to do…

CALIGULA: The love of freedom is born from the hatred of

tyranny. The more cruel the tyranny, the stronger it will be

the love of freedom!

CLAUDIUS: You get used to it, Gaius.
